Whitening

Brighter teeth, with a result that suits you.

Whitening brightens your own tooth colour instead of covering it up. The tooth itself stays untouched. How well it works for you is something we tell you beforehand, not just afterwards.

Wanting brighter teeth, and why it needs no justification

Coffee, tea, red wine, a few more years: your own tooth colour darkens over time, and at some point the difference to before becomes noticeable, in an old photo, in the mirror, compared to other people. Sometimes it's simply the wish for your teeth to look a bit fresher again.

Tooth discolouration isn't a disease. If you do nothing, nothing happens to you, no damage, no risk. That doesn't make the wish for brighter teeth any smaller: it needs about as much justification as a fresh haircut. Whitening is the approach that changes the least. It brightens your own colour without touching the tooth itself.

How it would work for you

  1. We take a look at your teeth.

Findings and starting shade, and whether your discolouration can be whitened at all, or whether a professional cleaning is already enough.

  2. We explain everything.

What's realistic to expect, what risks exist, and what to consider if you have visible crowns or fillings, and we schedule the following appointments.

  3. Professional cleaning.

About two weeks before whitening, we remove plaque and surface staining: the starting point for an even result.

  4. The whitening itself.

Your gums are protected, then the whitening gel takes effect over several short rounds. The whole session takes around one and a half to two hours.

A brighter smile isn't a new face. It's yours, a shade fresher. Often that's exactly enough.

What it costs

Whitening for an aesthetic wish is a private, out-of-pocket service. Public insurance covers nothing, because no disease is being treated. Since there's no dedicated fee-schedule item for it, it's billed via a comparable service. We name the price after your consultation, once the findings and chosen method are settled.

Internal whitening of a single dark tooth after a root canal is a different case: because a discolouration with a medical history is being brightened here, a cost contribution may be possible in individual cases, which we clarify with you directly.

Before we begin, there's a written agreement that states clearly: private service, this price. And we're just as upfront about what may come later: if you have visible crowns or fillings that no longer match the new shade after whitening, replacing them, if you choose to, is a separate, later item.

When something else is a better fit

The aesthetic options differ in how much they change about the tooth: from cleaning, which changes nothing, to a crown, which changes a lot. Whitening sits at the start of that range: it costs no healthy tooth structure and can be repeated without harm if needed.

One thing is worth discussing beforehand if you already have visible crowns or fillings: they won't brighten along with your teeth. That's why we whiten first and only then fix the shade of any new restorations, not the other way round.

Is it really only about surface staining?

Professional cleaning

Coffee, tea or nicotine deposits sit on the tooth, not inside it. A cleaning reveals your own colour again without changing the tooth. Often that's the whole wish, right there. What that covers is under Preventive Care.

Should shape or position change too, or does the discolouration barely respond?

Veneer

For a wish about shape or position, or when a discolouration barely responds to whitening, a veneer is the next step. What a veneer offers is under Veneers.

Does the tooth need extensive restoration anyway?

Crown

If a crown is coming up regardless, its shade is planned in directly, instead of whitening beforehand for no reason. What a restoration covers is under Fixed Tooth Replacement.

Whitening is the start of this sequence, not its end: if you need more than a brighter shade, this is where you continue from.

Whether whitening is the right path for you or something else, we'll work that out together.

Zahngesundheit verstehen, Entscheidung leben.

Two paths to a brighter tooth

We offer two paths to a brighter tooth colour. They differ in what they treat: several visibly discoloured teeth from the outside, or a single dark tooth from the inside. Which one fits follows from your starting situation, not from a preference.

In-office whitening

For several visible teeth

Works
From the outside, with a highly concentrated gel while your gums are protected
Process
One session of about one and a half to two hours, right here in the practice
Fits when
several teeth need even brightening, the most common case

Internal whitening

For a single dark tooth

Works
From the inside, on a non-vital (dead) tooth
Process
Several appointments over about two to three weeks, with a whitening agent placed inside the tooth
Fits when
a root-treated or injured tooth has darkened, external whitening barely helps here

If you'd like to know more

Does whitening damage the teeth?

With professional application, no lasting damage to tooth enamel has been shown. Saliva evens out the short-term effect again. It's different with uncontrolled overuse, for example with high-dose products from the internet, where damage is possible. The difference lies in controlled application.

Does it hurt, and for how long?

Usually not. Many people notice a temporary sensitivity afterwards, a twinge especially with cold, which mostly settles within a few days. A soothing gel can ease that. If you're generally sensitive, tell us beforehand and we'll take preventive steps.

How bright will it get, can I choose?

The goal is your own colour, a few shades brighter, no artificial white. How much it brightens depends on your starting shade and the cause of the discolouration. With certain types of discolouration, for example from a childhood antibiotic or a mineralisation disorder of the enamel, the result is less predictable; we tell you that beforehand, not just afterwards.

How long does it last?

About one to two years, depending on diet, smoking and care, longer in favourable cases. After that, it can be whitened again.

What about my crowns and fillings?

They don't brighten along with your teeth. That's why we whiten first and only then fix the shade of any new restorations, with at least two weeks in between, so the final colour has settled and bonded work holds securely. Existing visible crowns or fillings may need replacing after whitening so they match again, which we discuss beforehand.

How long does the whitening session take?

About one and a half to two hours: including gum protection, several rounds of gel, and checks in between. Consultation and professional cleaning are separate, shorter appointments beforehand. Since no anaesthetic is needed, you can go straight on with your day afterwards.
